LOST DOG = FOUND DOG

Update
Chuy was found safe and sound this morning. Thank you to everyone who kept an eye out for him and helped spread the word that he was missing. This sign below was the worst one I’ve ever had to design!

Experiencing the New PC

Friday, January 7th, 2011

My new HP ProBook 4520s XT946UT Notebook PC arrived this week. Though I was less than excited to purchase a PC, XANDRA DESIGN needed something more modern than the old home desktop machine. I eagerly opened the box when it arrived. The power cord was packaged in bubble wrap and the documentation in a ziplock bag. Granted they were nice bubble wrap and ziplock specimens, but… And then the shiny new machine was… covered with stickers? And fully loaded with unnecessary software. The experience was decidedly not Apple-like.

As I looked at it this afternoon, I was in awe of its shiny finish. Then I noticed that it is awfully blocky. It made me think of the ’70s. No, wait… it made me think of of Darth Vader!

My Macs are in no danger of losing my favor. But it will be nice to have a computer running Windows 7 Professional to track down Internet Explorer bugs in websites, develop user interfaces for software, design desktop icons for PC software applications, make spiffy PowerPoint movies for trade show exhibits, etc.

Pay Attention
Since 1998, designer Scott Stowell has been doing business as Open—and as such has survived by staying small, specialized in not really specializing in anything in particular, and (as described in the Cooper-Hewitt’s Design USA show) embraced “an open notion of the term ‘office,’ inviting different participants to every project.”

As it turns out, everything is connected and everything is an opportunity—if you’re paying attention. Please join Scott for a fresh talk full of new (and old) stories about new (and old) work from over ten years of making “design for people.” There may also be prizes and there will surely
be distractions.

Scott is the proprietor of Open, an independent design studio that has made a lot of things, including the editorial design of Good magazine, short films for Google and Jazz at Lincoln Center, signage for the Yale University Art Gallery and the new AIGA membership cards. In 2008, Scott was the winner of the National Design Award for Communication Design.

Horse of a Different Color

Friday, January 15th, 2010

blue
Here is my latest piece of artwork. It originated as a pencil drawing of two of my friend’s horses who I hang out with up in Isle la Motte, VT. Then I scanned the drawing and had a little fun in Photoshop. Gotta love a little color…
