The Making of ‘Justify Wins the Triple Crown’

July 26, 2018 by Lesley Baumann Leave a Comment

In this watercolor and colored pencil piece, Justify crosses the finish line of the Belmont Stakes and becomes the 13th winner of the Triple Crown. This great horse accomplished things that were supposed to be impossible. He won the Triple Crown so soon after American Pharoah ended the 37-year drought, he broke the Curse of Apollo, he became only the 2nd undefeated Triple Crown winner and he captured the hearts of fans around the world.

His brief racing career, lasting only a little more than 100 days, was a like a brilliant flash of lightening. It was a wild ride and a beautiful thing. It struck me with the inspiration to venture back to my true north, back to devoting more of my energy to my artwork.

Thank you, Justify.

I’d also like to wish a special thank you to Eric Dunetz at SouthpawCaptures for use of his photo as a reference.

Chuy (Digital Sketch)

February 28, 2018 by Lesley Baumann Leave a Comment

The iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil that I purchased a year and a half ago has become my go-to sketch book. I try to carry it with me most places that I go so that I can whip up a sketch on the spur of the moment or work on something a little more detailed without having to lug a giant board and a box of colored pencils with me. This drawing of my dog Chuy was created in the Adobe Sketch app.

Back to the Drawing Board

January 9, 2018 by Lesley Baumann Leave a Comment

Happy 2018!

After spending some time reflecting back on 2017, and the past few years for that matter, I’ve decided that a theme for this year is order — ‘Back to the Drawing Board’. Creating artwork has always been a part of who I am, even long before I realized that I loved science and wanted to be a graphic designer. This year I will endeavor to pour more of that passion into all of my work. Stay tuned!

Digital sketch done at FigLeaf Brewing Co. on New Year’s Eve 2017. I’ve always loved to take a sketch book with me wherever I go. The iPad has allowed these sketches to take on a new life.

2017 Holiday Art

December 22, 2017 by Lesley Baumann Leave a Comment

This year I returned to the tradition of creating holiday card artwork after taking a break since 2012. My cat, Cassie, served as the model this time around. Having a dark, tortoise shell color made it hard to get a good photograph of her in a house lacking in natural light. After chasing her around with that red ribbon all year, I finally got a good photo in mid fall. What came next was a bit of departure from my traditional media for this piece. In the past, I’ve worked with colored pencils on colored paper. This year I worked directly on my iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil and the Adobe Sketch app.

My Experience at WordCamp US 2017

December 4, 2017 by Lesley Baumann Leave a Comment

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Nashville for my first WordCamp US. It was quite an experience to be surrounded by so many fellow WordPress users!

For me the highlights included:

  • This was my first visit to Music City. It’s a charming city, and I can’t wait to return and spend more time someday.
  • There was plenty of time to hang out with friends that I have made thanks to WordPress.
  • I talked to other designers who have similar workflows, experiences and challenges.
  • I got inspired to think about how to get more women involved in our local WordPress community.
  • I learned more about Gutenberg, an all new editing experience, and how it’s going to change the future of WordPress.
  • I was challenged to make the web exceptional and learned that CSS grid could be a very useful tool for doing this through creative layouts.
  • I was absolutely thrilled to see kids at the event and to learn about ways to get them involved with WordPress both at home and at future WordCamps.
  • I finally got to experience the State of the Word in person. This came at a perfect time to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and map out plans for the upcoming year.
  • I came home with an incredible amount of swag. Thank you to all of the vendors who sponsored the camp and who are actively involved in the WordPress community.

I’d really like to thank the organizers of this spectacular event. Everything was beautiful and efficient, and their hard work really paid off.
